Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy of the Republic of Moldova is organizing a campaign in support of the disaster victims in Turkey. Today the representatives of the University administration went to the Embassy of the Republic of Turkey in the Republic of Moldova, that launched a call for aid collection, and made a donation of material goods (quilts, blankets, pillows, socks and non-perishable food items), worth 50 thousand lei. The Trade Union Committee of Nicolae Testemitanu University employees and the Association of Medical Students and Residents from Moldova contributed to this action.
Rector Emil Ceban sent, on behalf of the university community, a message of condolences and compassion to the Turkish people in connection with the natural disaster that took the lives of tens of thousands of people and traumatized physically and morally several million citizens, causing a lot of pain and colossal damage. According to the rector, to help the disaster victims in Turkey, a bank account for donations was also opened, to which employees, students, doctoral students, resident doctors, as well as other persons who wish to help will be able to make transfers in Moldovan lei. At the same time, as a sign of solidarity, at the proposal of the Board of Directors of Nicolae Testemitanu University, employees will be able to voluntarily donate an average salary for a working day to provide material support to the victims. At the end of the campaign, the accumulated financial means will be transferred to the Turkish Embassy in our country.
In this context, the Embassy of the Republic of Turkey in the Republic of Moldova urged those who wish to help the victims, to send directly to the diplomatic mission the necessary items such as: winter tents, mattresses (for the tent), quilts, blankets, sleeping bags, thermoses, heaters and baby diapers; personal hygiene and cleaning products. It is important that the products be new. They will be packed in an orderly manner, in boxes accompanied by a list of contents.
As a result of the devastating earthquakes of February 6 and 7, 10 provinces in Turkey were affected. As of today, more than 41 thousand deaths have been recorded, about 600 children have been left orphaned, and millions of people have been left homeless. The situation in Syria, torn apart by 12 years of civil war, is particularly worrying. The country’s infrastructure was destroyed and an estimated five million people were left homeless to endure cold and hunger. The major problem remains the insufficiency of the border crossings from Turkey to northwestern Syria to allow the entry of humanitarian aid.
