Professor Sorin Mihai Cimpeanu – Doctor Honoris Causa of ”Nicolae Testemitanu” University

The Senate of Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy of the Republic of Moldova conferred the honorary title Doctor Honoris Causa on Professor Sorin Mihai Cimpeanu, Doctor of Agronomic Sciences, Rector of the University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Bucharest (USAMV), President of the National Council of Rectors of Romania (CNRR).

The ceremony was inaugurated by Rector Emil Ceban who, in his Laudatio, emphasized the contribution of Professor Sorin Mihai Cimpeanu to promoting international cooperation between universities and strengthening academic partnerships between higher education institutions in the Republic of Moldova and Romania, encouraging the exchange of good practices, university mobilities and the alignment of educational systems with European quality standards.

"Professor Sorin Mihai Cimpeanu has constantly supported the development of the Republic of Moldova and the European integration process. In 2021, he signed the agreement on the mutual recognition of diplomas, certificates and scientific titles between the Government of Romania and the Government of the Republic of Moldova, which  includes not only facilitating academic and professional mobility of citizens from both states, but also the international recognition of study documents obtained in the Republic of Moldova. As President of the National Council of Rectors of Romania, Professor Cimpeanu supported the process of integrating universities from the Republic of Moldova into the European area of ​​education and research, as well as into relevant European associative structures," noted Professor Emil Ceban.

The rector of the Technical University of Moldova, Professor Viorel Bostan, supported the decision of Nicolae Testemitanu University Senate as well, and spoke about the initiation of professional relations with Sorin Mihai Cimpeanu, the exchange of experience and the adoption of good practices in implementing reforms in the higher education system in the Republic of Moldova, the development and promotion of the University Francophone Agency and the integration of our country into the French-speaking space. "I would say that Sorin Cimpeanu has a French elegance, a British seriousness and a Romanian soul, and that is what defines his famous personality", rector Bostan pointed out.

In turn, Professor Sorin Mihai Cimpeanu thanked the Senate of Nicolae Testemitanu University: "I am overwhelmed by the honor of receiving this honorary title in an anniversary context, with an audience of the highest rank. Your gesture honors me and obliges me, equally, to support the universities in the Republic of Moldova even more, and for joint partnerships to yield greater returns," Doctor Honoris Causa Sorin Mihai Cimpeanu stated.

The honorary title was granted to Prof. Cimpeanu in the presence of an official and academic audience: representatives of the governments of Bucharest and Chisinau and over 60 rectors from both countries, members of the Senate of Nicolae Testemitanu University, heads of departments and subdivisions, professors, resident physicians, doctoral candidates and students.

The ceremony took place on October 23, 2025, as part of the anniversary events dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the founding of the University.

Professor Sorin Mihai Cimpeanu is a well-known personality in the academic and scientific environment in Romania, corresponding member of Gheorghe Ionescu Sisesti Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences. Over time, he has held positions of national interest such as: vice president of the Romanian Senate, Minister of Education of Romania, senator, deputy, interim Prime Minister in the Romanian Government, rector, member, coordinator and expert in various specialized committees, President of the University  Francophone Agency, dean, vice-dean, engineer.

Sorin Mihai Cimpeanu holds the honorary title of Doctor Honoris Causa from several universities in Romania. He is currently a full member of the Romanian Academy of Technical Sciences, an Associate Professor at the Higher Institute of Agriculture in Lille, France, and a doctoral supervisor at USAMV.

Professor Cimpeanu is the author and co-author of 18 books, book chapters, textbooks and 114 scientific articles. He was the director and responsible person for 31 projects, 10 of which were international, and an expert consultant in another 60 research, training or infrastructure projects. He holds a patent.

For his multifaceted and prodigious activity, he was awarded the National Order of the Star of Romania in the rank of Officer (2019 and 2024), the BENE MERENTI distinction, the Palmes Academiques Order in the rank of Commander granted by the Government of the French Republic (2020), the Nihil Sine Deo distinction granted by the Royal House of Romania, the "Personality of the Year for a European Romania" distinction granted by EUROLINK - HOUSE OF EUROPE, the Merit for Education Medal, the In HocSignoVinces National Award for research activity, etc.
