The 9th edition of the international conference entitled "Yesterday's Heritage - Implications in the Development of Tomorrow's Society" took place in Chisinau on February 8 and 9, 2024. The scientific event was organized by the Academy of Sciences of Moldova (ASM) in partnership with 9 national and foreign institutions, in the context of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, which this year was held with the slogan "Women in research: destinies, contributions, perspectives".
The President of ASM, academician Ion Tighineanu, opened the conference with a congratulatory message: "Dear ladies for whom science and research have become a way of existence, a response to the challenges of society and the times. You have chosen a not so simple path and decided to pursue a career in science, in different fields of research, competing side by side with the men who dominated the mathematical, physics, engineering, IT, and agricultural areas. It was an assumed decision and an enormous responsibility, because in addition to the valuable results obtained in your field of work, you remained mothers, grandmothers, daughters, sisters, emanating a special beauty, which springs from the inside denoting goodness, spiritual harmony, and trust" .
For her part, Natalia Mogol, deputy general director of the State Agency of Intellectual Property, emphasized the importance of women's involvement in the scientific and cultural area. She highlighted Agency’s commitment to support and promote research and development achievements, advocating for gender equality and diversity in these fields.
During the plenary session, academician Eva Gudumac, Habilitated Doctor of Medical Sciences, university professor at Natalia Gheorghiu Department of Pediatric Surgery, Orthopedics and Anesthesiology of Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy, vice-president of ASM, spoke about the complex activity of academician Natalia Gheorghiu - renowned doctor and scientist, pioneer of pediatric surgery in Moldova, paying a well-deserved tribute to the illustrious pediatric surgeon, who was also her mentor.
