Gheorghe Buruiana was re-elected president of the Association of Medical Students and Residents from Moldova

Gheorghe Buruiana, resident doctor and doctoral student, was re-elected president of the Association of Medical Students and Residents of Moldova (ASRM) for the second consecutive term. The 101 delegates with the right to vote, who participated in the Elective General Assembly on December 21, 2022, voted unanimously for his candidacy. During the meeting, the  Censor Board of the student organization was also elected.

Gheorghe Buruiana presented the Activity Report of ASRM for the period December 7, 2017 – December 20, 2022, reviewing the most important projects and actions undertaken by students. The leader of the organization of medical students mentioned that the period was marked by the  COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine, some of the activities being canceled and replaced, according to the situations, needs and possibilities of the students. Thus, it was possible to participate in over 500 activities. "If until the pandemic we thought that scientific events could only take place with physical presence, during it we managed to organize the MedEspera Congress in a mixed format as well. With each edition, this major project of ASRM becomes increasingly attractive for young medical students from all over the world. Another large-scale project is MedTraining, which organized 48 off-line and on-line trainings in 5 years for more than 1200 students. Infographics is a very useful informative project both for the student community and for the whole society, and the idea of ​​organizing several scientific circles belongs to the first-year students' " , stressed the leader of the organization.

Until now, ASRM has managed to establish collaborative relationships with the International Federation of Medical Students' Associations (IFMSA), the European Medical Students Association (EMSA) and the Federation of Associations of Medical Students from Romania (FASMR). Due to these collaborations, more than 20 agreements have been concluded, offering our students opportunities to participate in research mobility and, respectively, to take over good practices, and upon return to start even better things at home.

 Cultural activities were the most affected by the pandemic, practically all of them being stopped. This year the Freshmen Ball was resumed and efforts are being made to revive the university TVC. The Laureate Students Gala – one of the most important events of the ASRM and the University – was excellently organized, except for 2020, this year reaching its 10th edition. At the same time, the flashmobs with the involvement of several international students have been successful. 

With regard to sports activities, the president emphasized that our doctors constantly come up with initiatives to organize competitions, thus confirming the saying "A healthy mind in a healthy body". The Marathon of Quality, Excellence and Performance - 75 years of Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy was the most resounding sports event of this period. The start was given at 7:50 a.m. and the 75 km-race was a symbolic figure in the context of the unique celebration of Alma Mater's anniversary by promoting a healthy lifestyle among the population.

During the years 2017-2022, ASRM members actively participated in various social actions: university immunization marathons, assembling visors for medical workers, as operators at the Green Line and processing electronic records at the National Public Health Agency, as volunteers at the COVID-19 screening center, blood donation actions, training activities for high school students on providing medical aid, tree planting campaigns, sanitizing the areas near the hostels and teaching buildings of the University, charity campaigns for hospitalized children, etc.

Moreover, Gheorghe Buruiana mentioned the facilities granted to students, especially to those from socially-vulnerable categories, such as discount cards for meals in university canteens, free public transport travel passes, etc. Currently ASRM includes 435 members – students and resident doctors. In the last five years, the Association has received four national and countless institutional awards, among which the Anniversary Medal of Nicolae Testemitanu University "75 years of quality, excellence and performance".

As a guest of honor at the elective forum, Rector Emil Ceban addressed words of appreciation and thanks to the ASRM members for their involvement, participation, enthusiasm, team spirit, devotion and availability in achieving nice goals at Nicolae Testemitanu University, in this context expressing the openness and support of the University administration as regards all the beautiful initiatives of students. The Rector highlighted the importance of including students in the governing bodies of the University and urged them to be firm in their endeavors and to have confidence that the institution will always  continue to support them. 

At the end, several ASRM members emphasized that the organization's activity provides a unique opportunity for personal and professional development.

The Elective General Assembly was also attended by the vice-rector for social activity Marcel Abraș, who moderated the event, deans and vice-deans of the faculties, as well as heads of university subdivisions. Aurel Popovici, prezident of Sanatatea Trade Union Federation from Moldova, and Igor Zubcu, president of the National Confederation of Trade Unions from Moldova, also highly  appreciated the ASRM representatives’activity, while the latter offered the Association of Medical Students and Residents the trade union organization’s badge.
