Dozens of young people - students for one day at the Faculty of Pharmacy of ”Nicolae Testemitanu” University

Curious and impatient, dozens of young people –  Grade 8-12 students - had the opportunity to become university students for one day at the Pharmacy Faculty of Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy of the Republic of Moldova. The event took place on March 25 this year, being organized in collaboration with the Association of Pharmacy Students from the Republic of Moldova.

The activity started with a meeting of young people with the administrative team of the Faculty of Pharmacy, teaching staff and students. Dean Nicolae Ciobanu presented general information about the University and the educational offer for the 2023-2024 academic year, he spoke about the Pharmacy integrated study program, the admission conditions, the specifics of  studies, academic mobility, about accommodation, student life, extracurricular activities etc. "Medicine cannot exist without medicines, and if you are interested in their preparation and action, I urge you to choose Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy - the only higher education institution in the country, which trains specialists in the field Pharmacy", emphasized the dean.

The program continued with an introductory course in pharmacognosy and pharmaceutical botany, and later, based on the knowledge gained, the participants carried out a laboratory work "Macro- and microscopic techniques for the identification of medicinal plants". The young people looked at the structures of a plant cell under a microscope, then studied the herbaceous material tactilely, so as to identify which species the plant product belongs to.

While visiting the Medicine Technology Department, the young people performed a drug disintegration test using a device that imitates the physiological conditions of the human body. Thus they were able to determine the quality of the tested tablets.

This activity was followed by an exciting visit to Vasile Procopisin Department of Social Pharmacy. The young people were amazed by the evolution of the pharmaceutical field, demonstrated through the material used in the practice of pharmacists in different historical periods. Here, the young people also learned about the social, ethical and moral aspects of pharmaceutical care and, in order to better feel the role of a pharmacist, they simulated a dialogue in the pharmacy between a specialist in medicines (pharmacist) and a customer.

The program continued with the practical lesson "Complex combinations in chemical analysis", organized by the Department of General Chemistry, during which several chemical reactions performed with liquid and solid substances were demonstrated and the students analyzed their properties.

Later, the young people learned about the stages of drug study at the Department of Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacy, about conducting clinical trials and evidence-based medicine.

The program of the event "A student day at the Faculty of Pharmacy" continued with visits to Vasile Procopişin University Pharmaceutical Center and scientific laboratories, tours through classrooms and study halls, the university canteen and the Student Campus - the hostels and the University Sports Complex.

Most of those who participated in the event told us that they see themselves as pharmacists in the future, because the given field offers multiple opportunities for career development.

I will never forget the positive attitude and warm atmosphere of the students and teachers who introduced us to the world of plants and medicines. The Faculty of Pharmacy offers a motivation to hope for something more. I am in high spirits: with positive emotions and feelings. I was impressed by our mentors and their positive attitude. I am glad that I had this opportunity to feel in the shoes of a Pharmacy student".

"It's a new experience for me, in school I didn't have the opportunity to study a plant under a microscope. About today... it will definitely influence my future".
