On January 26, India’s Republic Day was marked by the largest community of international students originating from this country at Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy of the Republic of Moldova.
The event took place at the University Sociocultural Complex and began with the hoisting of the Indian state flag by Nicolae Testemitanu University rector, Professor Emil Ceban, together with Jai Saini, a V-year student at the Faculty of Medicine no. 2, the leader of Indian students at our university, and continued with the singing of the national anthem by the students participating in the ceremony.
Dressed in national costume, Indian medical students celebrated this holiday with an artistic entertainment program designed to showcase history and culture through dance, song, traditional cuisine, and henna tattooing.
Rector Emil Ceban congratulated the young people on Republic Day - one of their national holidays, which marks their identity as a people and a country. On January 26, 1950, the Constitution of India was adopted, the country being proclaimed a sovereign and democratic republic.
In this context, Professor Ceban pointed out some milestones from the international collaboration with the state of India, which began in 2000, when the first Indian citizen was enrolled to study at our university. At first, students were mainly recruited from the northern part of the country, later the fruitful collaboration with institutions from the southern region, especially with the states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, was extended. "Our university provides all the necessary support to international students for integration into the university community and society in general, respecting their national culture and traditions," said Rector Ceban.
Vice-rector for social activity Marcel Abras, who also participated in the event, expressed his admiration for the initiative of Indian students to celebrate this significant day while being far from home. "Your country has trained very good young people who know how to promote the values and traditions of India all over the world. Stay united and maintain this team spirit in the future, promote your traditions, but also consider those of the country that is now hosting you", urged vice-rector Abras.
Dean of the Faculty of Medicine no. 2 Mircea Betiu mentioned that thanks to the students from India we can interact more closely with the culture of this country, recognized by its exoticism: "We are proud that you are part of Nicolae Testemitanu University family, and we wish you to become good, valuable doctors and leaders in the communities to which you will return".
Currently, at Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine anf Pharmacy are studying 1267 Indian citizens from all geographical areas of the country, mainly from the state of Kerala (950 students) and from the state of Tamil Nadu (48 students). The training is carried out in accordance with the requirements of the Medical Council of India.
